Kyiv-Caves Lavra provides spiritual guidance to a parish in Canada

003With the blessing of the Holy Archimandrite of the Kiev-Caves Lavra, the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onuphrius, the parish of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos has been created in Richmond Hill (a city in south-central York Region, Ontario, Canada) – the part of the Greater Toronto Area. At the request of the head of this religious community, protopriest Artemius Litvinov and on behalf of the Hierarchy of the Holy Caves Monastery, we testify that this parish is indeed in unity with the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which carries out its salvation mission under the omophorion of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphrius.

At a time when the Patriarchate of Constantinople openly crossed the line of their authority, neglected the centuries-old canons of the Orthodox Church and granted  so-called ‘autocephaly’ (independence) to the Ukrainian schismatics in Canada, the question of canonical belonging is very significant regarding the so-called “Ukrainian Orthodox Church” of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. Many people who do not agree with the actions of Patriarch Bartholomew and those local Churches that supported him, want to remain “within the walls” of the canonical Church. For this very reason, the blessing of the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church graced the foundation of the parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is spiritually guided by the Holy Dormition Kiev-Caves Lavra.

005-22Currently, repairs to the church building are being undertaken while all the necessary church equipment has been purchased and regular divine services are scheduled to begin in January 2020.

Previously people wishing to pray had to spend 1 or 2 hours in traffic to get to their nearest church. The new temple is located in the centre of the region with easy access to the major transport routes so it now takes about 30 minutes to get there from Toronto and 10 to 15 minutes for those living in Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Vaughan, and King City.

002-40The Faithful have been anticipating  the opening of their new church and looking for a suitable location in Richmond Hill for over 10 years.By the mercy of God and the Most Holy Mother of God, the long-lasting supplications and pursuit of the believers have been heard and were a success on the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos. The building  has an architectural heritage dating back to 1882.
