The Veneration of Archangel Michael in Kyiv
Two testimonies of the appearance of Archangel Michael are noted in the life of Venerable Elder Parthenius of Kyiv-Pechersk: “Once, after a vigil of prayerful watching, he fell into a light slumber and saw his cell filled with numerous beast-like monsters rushing at him with fury. In terror, he cried: ‘O Most Holy Lady, Mother of God!’ At this cry, a wondrous light illuminated the cell, and the All-Blessed Virgin, accompanied by Archangel Michael, appeared in indescribable glory. The terrifying creatures vanished like smoke, and upon awakening, he beheld with his wakeful eyes the radiance at the place where the Most Pure One had stood, filling him with trembling joy.”
As a hieroschemamonk, Elder Parthenius celebrated the Divine Liturgy daily. During one such service, he recorded in his private notes:
“On the 13th of November, 1843, I beheld Chrysostom and the Archangel, who came to my aid, and I made an icon to commemorate this vision.”
Another manifestation of Archangel Michael dates back to the early 17th century and involved the Zaporozhian Cossacks. This event, documented by Metropolitan Peter Mohyla of Kyiv and cited by Archpriest H. Dyachenko in his book Spiritual World, serves as an example of God’s mercy toward penitent sinners:
“After their victory over the Turkish forces near Khotyn, the Zaporozhian Cossacks, as was their custom, invaded Turkish territories to plunder. They sacked numerous Turkish villages and cities, loading their ship with abundant spoils before setting sail homeward. However, as they approached the shore, a fierce contrary wind arose, and enormous waves struck their boat with such force that it began to take on water and sink rapidly.
Seeing their imminent doom, the Cossacks turned to God with tears and cries, praying for deliverance through the intercessions of the Most Pure Mother of God of Pechersk and Archangel Michael. They vowed to serve for some time in the monastery of the Mother of God.
As they prayed, a great miracle occurred: from the lower part of the ship, a golden-haired youth suddenly appeared before them, mounted on a shining horse. Standing among the perishing Cossacks, he said: ‘Fear not, men, but pray earnestly to God, and He will deliver you from death; for this purpose, He has sent me.’ And with that, he vanished from their sight.
Meanwhile, the wind subsided, the sea calmed, and the ship, half-filled with water, was found completely dry as if no water had ever entered it. Witnessing such a miracle, the Cossacks glorified God with all their hearts for saving them from a terrible death. Upon safely returning to their homeland, they hastened to fulfil their vow to serve in the monastery of the Mother of God in the great Kyiv Lavra.”
