As with many ascetics of the Pechersk Monastery during the Mongol-Tatar invasion, very little is known about Hieromartyr Lucian. Some of the Pechersk saints met a martyr’s end during the invasion.

An ancient panel with an icon of the saint bears the inscription, “Hieromartyr Lucian suffered under Batu Khan around the year 1243.”

This date is approximate, as Kyiv was devastated by the Mongol army of Batu Khan in 1240. The relics of this ascetic are first mentioned on a map of the Far Caves, presumably from the year 1744, as “Venerable Lucian, Hieromartyr.”

On the map from 1769–1789, however, the same location was mistakenly marked as “St. Tikhon, Martyr.” In maps from the 19th century, “Hieromartyr Lucian” is again mentioned.

No further information about the saint is available.

The saint’s memory is especially honoured on October 28 (October 15, Old Style), the day of Hieromartyr Lucian the Presbyter.
