Rev. Euthymius the Schema-Monk (14th century)

evfimiy_shim

Venerable Euthymius lived in purity and silence, emulating the monastic virtues of the venerable Fathers. Often, with great reverence, he offered the Bloodless Sacrifice, and through his constant prayers he attained spiritual communion and converse with the Angels. And when he was clothed in the Great Schema, having given himself over to the ascetic struggle of silence, he spoke with no one about anything whatsoever. Prayer alone was ever upon his lips, whether in church or in his cell. Moreover, he partook of no food prepared by fire, but was content with herbs alone. And now he abundantly partakes of the food of Paradise and, together with the Angels, unceasingly glorifies God and prays for us.

In the list of the “Book so called”, published by N. Barsukov, among the saints of the “city of Kyiv” there is named “Venerable Father Euthymius, hieroschema-monk, man of silence”.

On a map of 1661 the ascetic is mentioned as “Euthymius the Hieroschema-monk”; in 1703 simply as “Euthymius”; and on a later map, presumably dating from 1744, as “Venerable Euthymius the Schema-monk”. An ancient Lavra manuscript narrative, published by Bishop Modest, states:

“Venerable Euthymius, when he had been tonsured into the Schema, never conversed with anyone, neither little nor much, but only prayed in the church and in his cell.”

The commemoration of the ascetic is celebrated separately on 2 February (20 January according to the Old Style), on the feast of Venerable Euthymius the Great.
