The conference on the 100th anniversary of the killing of the St. Vladimir the Priest-Martyr’s “Kiev Metropolitan St. Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky) the Priest-Martyr’s and the beginning of persecutions against the Orthodox Church in XX century” is going to be held with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onuphrius the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Within the walls of the holy monastery, where the metropolitan spent his last days before the execution, scientists from different countries of the world will discuss the beginning of large-scale persecutions against the Church, which were unfolded in the XX century by a totalitarian atheistic regime.

Objectives of Conference: the study of the religious heritage and martyr’s exploit of Kiev and Galicia metropolitan St. Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky; +07.02.1918) the Priest-Martyr’s, search, study, generalization and systematization of testimonies and sources on the history of persecutions against the Orthodox Church and repressions against the Orthodox clergy during the Soviet era, rehabilitation and perpetuation of the memory of the victims of repression, comprehension of the confessional path of the Orthodox Church during the years of the God-seeking persecution, revival of the heritage and veneration of the memory of the holy new martyrs and confessors of the Orthodox Church of the XX century.

The opening of a photo exhibition dedicated to the history of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in the Soviet era and the persecutions against the Orthodox Church in the USSR will take place within the framework of the conference.

On the days of the conference, on February 7, the day of the killing of Kiev and Galicia metropolitan St. Vladimir (Bogoyavlensky; +07.02.1918) the Priest-Martyr’s, whose hundred-year-old martyr death became the source of the unprecedented persecution against the Orthodox Church began, the festive Divine Liturgy and a funeral service for all the innocent victims in the years of Bolshevik terror will take place at Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

Organizers: Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, National Kiev-Pechersky Historical and Cultural Reserve, International Institute of Athos Heritage.

2. Importance of martyrdom and confession in the history of the Church: scientific and theological interpretations.

3. Holy new martyrs and confessors of the XX century: feat, legacy, memory.

4. The policy of the Soviet authorities regarding religion and the Church in the USSR.

5. History of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in the Soviet era: from closure to restoration.

6. Repressions against Orthodox hierarchs, clergy and believers from the 20s to 80s of the XX century.

7. Confessional service of the clergy of the Orthodox Church during the years of communist persecution.

8. Theological education during the years of atheistic censorship and persecution of the Church.

9. Modern Christian martyrs of the Middle East: meaning and significance of their exploits.

Languages of Conference: Ukrainian, Russian.

Place and Date: February 7 – 8, 2018, Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Kiev, Lavrskaya Str. 15, Building No. 45 (conference hall of the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra).

Report Time: up to 20 minutes.

The conference provides for full-time and correspondence participation.

The conference proceedings is planned to be published based on the results of the work.

Organizers provide free accommodation and meals for the duration of the conference.
