Easter Services presided over by the Head of the UOC

001In the luminous night of the “Feast of Feasts and Celebration of Celebrations”, the Easter Matins and Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in the Refectory Church of Venerable Anthony and Theodosius of the Caves were led by the Holy Archimandrite of the Kyiv-Caves Lavra, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphrius of Kyiv and All Ukraine.

Before the service began, the official delegation of the UOC had delivered to the Lavra the Holy Fire, which came down in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on Great Saturday. Thereafter, the Head of the UOC distributed the Holy Fire to those who gathered in the Refectory Church.

After the midnight service with the Canon of Great Saturday, the hierarchs, clergy and the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church took part in the Easter Cross procession around the Dormition Cathedral of the Lavra. After the loud and repeated singing of “Christ is Risen”, Matins began, followed by the Divine Liturgy. During solemn divine services in the Refectory Church, the Primate of the UOC was co-served by the Vicegerent of the Monastery, Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshgorod and Chernobyl, Metropolitan Anthony of Boryspil and Brovary, Archbishop Panteleimon of Bucha, Bishop Viktor of Baryshevka, Bishop Sylvester of Bilogorodka, Bishop Laurus of Irpin, Bishop Mark of Borodyanka, brethren and guests of the Monastery in the holy rite.

When the Easter stichera were chanted at the end of Matins, the archpastors handed out the Paschal eggs to those praying and greeted everyone with joyful words: “Christ is Risen!”

At the same time, a fraternal Easter-order service was performed in the Great Church. The Matins and Liturgy were led by the Dean of the Monastery, Archimandrite Anthony, joined by the Monastery Treasurer, Archimandrite Nestor, by the Warden of the Far Caves, Archimandrite Damian, and the Monastery clergy.

In accordance with the tradition, during the Liturgy, the clergy have read the Gospel in different languages.

In the course of the divine services, the Paschal Catechetical Homily of St. John Chrysostom was traditionally read, followed by the Easter Epistle of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphrius to the Archpastors, Pastors, Monastics and all the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which proclaimed: “The Resurrection of Christ is the triumph of the victory of life over death, it is the Feast of Life, and since life is the most precious gift that has been given to a person, Easter is also the greatest Feast, for in the Glorious Resurrection, the Son of God, our Saviour, has returned to us the eternal life that we had once lost.”

At the end of the Liturgy, a prayer was read for the consecration of the Easter cakes, painted eggs and another food, whereafter the latter were sprinkled with the holy water.

After the end of the divine services, the brethren of the Monastery congratulated the hierarchy of the Lavra on the Resurrection of Christ and performed the Easter Rite of the blessed Artos bread.
