Christ is born — glorify Him!

святитель Іоанн (Максимович)

“Secretly You were born in a cave, yet Heaven proclaimed You to all, offering the star as its mouth, O Saviour.”

Quietly and without noise the Son of God descended to earth and was incarnate. As a drop of dew falls upon the ground, so the power of the Most High overshadowed the Most Pure Virgin, and the Saviour of the world was born of Her.

Yet the world did not notice the great work accomplished by God. People were occupied with their own concerns, their attention fixed on earthly matters and on the loud events of this world.

Rome strengthened its dominion; Greece refined the arts and indulged in the service of the flesh; the peoples of the East sought answers in the forces of nature.

The Jews awaited deliverance and expected the Messiah as an earthly king.

Still, no earthly success satisfied the human heart. A deep yearning for truth was felt everywhere.
“For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom” (1 Corinthians 1:22).

No one awaited a Saviour meek and lowly in heart, clothed not in earthly but in heavenly glory. Yet such was He Who “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

He came not with outward power nor with proud wisdom, but in the form of a servant.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45; Matthew 20:28).

Thus He was born in a cave, in a small town, among the poverty of a righteous carpenter. Even the ruler of this world did not recognise Him.

The shepherds heard the angelic hymn, and the star proclaimed to all that
“the true Light which gives light to every man was coming into the world” (John 1:9–11).

And even now the Star of Bethlehem shines invisibly over the world, calling every heart to lift its gaze heavenward and rejoice, for God is with us.

Christ is born — glorify Him!
