Sayings of Venerable Ephrem the Syrian On Humility and Humble-mindedness
However much a person may exalt himself in the pride of his heart, he still treads the earth from which he was taken, and to the earth he shall return; but the Lord exalts the humble.
Pride is hateful both to God and to people, but those who love humility the Lord raises up.
With a sincere heart love humility, and you will find grace with God Almighty both here and in the age to come.
He who enters into battle and desires to gain victory, let him clothe himself, as in armour, with the glorious armour of humility.
By humility a person pleases God more than by sacrifices and offerings.
Humility raises even sinners to perfection, while pride brings even the perfect down to corruption.
Great progress and great glory is humble-mindedness, and in it there is no fall. A sign of humble-mindedness is to meet the needs of one’s brother with both hands, as though you yourself were receiving help.
He who wishes to move a stone does not place the lever on top, but underneath, and thus easily turns the stone. This is an image of humble-mindedness.
He who exalts himself prepares dishonour for himself, but he who serves his neighbour in humble-mindedness shall be glorified.
The beginning of fruit-bearing is the blossom, and the beginning of humble-mindedness is obedience in the Lord.
Do not exalt your heart, lest, having suffered a fall, you bring dishonour upon yourself.
To exalt oneself is almost the same as reproaching God with one’s own merits.
Pride of mind always seeks honour, but humble-mindedness neither exalts itself in glory nor is troubled in dishonour, for it awaits its reward from the Lord.
Do you desire a righteous life? Practise humble-mindedness, for without it a righteous life is impossible.
Do all your works in humble-mindedness, in the Name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and thereby your fruit shall be lifted up to heaven. But pride is like a very tall tree that is rotten within: all its branches are fragile, and whoever climbs it immediately falls from the height.
Love humble-mindedness, and you will never fall into the devil’s snare, for soaring on swift wings you will always remain far above the enemy’s nets.
