Rev. Benjamin (14th century)
The Far Caves
Venerable Benjamin is mentioned on the maps of the Far Caves from the year 1638.
An ancient Lavra manuscript, published by Vladyka Modest, states: “The Venerable Benjamin, a merchant, engaged in extensive trade. One day, while attentively listening to the church service, he took note of the words from the Psalms: ‘Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies’ (Ps. 5:6). He remembered this and thought, ‘If the Lord God will destroy all who speak untruth, then He will destroy merchants too, as commerce can hardly do without lies.’ Later, upon hearing the words, ‘It is hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven’ (Matt. 19:23), he gave all his possessions to the poor and to the churches and became a monk, pleasing the Lord God in fasting and prayers until the end of his life.”
According to Vladyka Modest, the inscription on the board that once covered the relics of St. Benjamin read: “Our venerable father Benjamin, while living in the world, was involved in countless commercial dealings. But upon hearing the words of the Gospel, ‘It is hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven’ (Matt. 19:23), he exchanged his wealth for voluntary poverty for the sake of Christ, gave all his possessions to those in need, and came to the poor in spirit, the venerable fathers of the Pechersk Monastery, with whom he labored worthily. He then departed in spirit to Christ the Giver of Crowns, receiving the crown of victory. His holy relics now rest here, incorrupt.”
The commemoration of Venerable Benjamin is celebrated on October 26 (October 13, Old Style), on the feast day of Saint Benjamin the Deacon and Martyr.
